Long Story: How Jomo Kenyatta deported his Minister's 'feminist' American Wife
Dr Kiano's American wife was asked to leave after a humiliating incident
It was 1966 at the now-defunct Africa Club in Nairobi. Cabinet Minister Dr. Julius Gikonyo Kiano, the first Kenyan to get a Ph.D., was having a drink. On her side was a pretty young woman. The night was long. The merry-making was going on. The Minister hardly noticed the entry of his protective American wife, Ernestine Hammond. Furious, Ernestine walked towards Dr. Kiano. She removed her shoe and hurled it toward the Minister. He ducked, or she missed the target.
